Medication Not Helping Your Depression? It's Time to Consider TMS

Medication Not Helping Your Depression? It's Time to Consider TMS

Have you tried multiple antidepressants without relief? This experience is more common than you might think. When two or more medications fail to improve symptoms, the condition is called treatment-resistant depression.

An estimated 2.8 million Americans live with treatment-resistant depression. This figure represents approximately 30.9% of the nearly 9 million adults in the United States who are currently being treated with medication for major depressive disorder.

But just because treatment-resistant depression is common doesn’t mean it’s hopeless.

At Revived Soul Medical P.C., our specialists have helped countless patients with treatment resistant depression find relief with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) at our offices in Midwood and Brighton Beach, Brooklyn.

How TMS works to improve your mood

TMS is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic pulses to activate nerve cells. During a session, an electromagnetic coil is placed against your scalp. This coil delivers pulses that reach about two to three centimeters into the brain, specifically stimulating the prefrontal cortex, which is underactive in people with clinical depression.

By increasing activity in these regions, we reset the brain’s natural chemistry. Unlike medications that travel through your bloodstream and affect your entire body, TMS is a local treatment. This means you won’t have to deal with common drug side effects like weight gain, nausea, or sleepiness.

Most patients undergo treatment five days a week for several weeks to see the best results. Because there's no sedation involved, you can drive yourself home and resume your normal routine immediately after each session.

What to expect during your treatment

Starting a new medical procedure can feel intimidating, but we make the process as comfortable as possible. When you visit our Midwood or Brighton Beach locations, we’ll start with a thorough evaluation to ensure TMS is the right choice for you.

During the actual procedure, you’ll sit in a comfortable chair while the device is calibrated to your specific needs. You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head. Most sessions last between 20 and 40 minutes. Because the treatment is non-systemic, it’s a safe option for many people who can't tolerate the side effects of antidepressants.

We monitor your progress closely throughout the weeks of treatment. Our medical team tracks your symptom changes and adjusts the protocol if needed. We want to ensure you receive the highest level of care in a professional environment close to home. If you live in Brooklyn and feel stuck in your current mental health routine, this technology provides a different way to address the underlying cause of your symptoms.
