Panic Attack Q & A

What is a panic attack?

A panic attack is the sudden onset of fear accompanied by a range of disturbing physical symptoms, including:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling like you’re choking
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Chills or hot flashes
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Feeling detached from reality
  • Feeling like you’re dying

Panic attacks are frightening and disorienting. They’re often severely disruptive to your life, interfering with your ability to go to work, the grocery store, or complete other everyday tasks. In addition to the attacks, you may also develop fear or anxiety about having a panic attack, which can worsen your stress and lead to avoidance behaviors.

What causes panic attacks?

Panic attacks are the defining symptom of panic disorder, a type of anxiety disorder. They can strike out of the blue, or you may have specific stressors or triggers. For example, if you feel nervous about public speaking or social situations, your anxiety could manifest as a panic attack.

How are panic attacks diagnosed?

If you think you’ve had a panic attack, make an appointment at Revived Soul Medical P.C. They offer expert exams and psychiatric consultations to diagnose your condition. You’ll have a physical exam, including blood tests, to rule out any health issues that could cause similar symptoms. You may also have tests to see if substance abuse triggers your attacks.

During your psychiatric assessment, your provider talks to you about your symptoms and your lifestyle, fears, relationship problems, or situations you might be avoiding. They also collect your personal and family medical history.

Your provider looks for the diagnostic criteria for panic attacks, including frequent, unexpected attacks. They also want to know if you have additional fears about having a panic attack or the consequences of an attack.

How are panic attacks treated?

Revived Soul Medical P.C. provides customized, multidisciplinary treatment plans for panic attacks. Your provider may recommend a combination of medication, psychotherapy, and mindfulness practices to help you learn to manage your anxious feelings and reduce or eliminate panic attacks.

If you have panic attacks, call Revived Soul Medical P.C. or make an appointment online today for expert, customized treatment.
